The Changes for Patch 4.2:
- Patch 4.2 will add the new Firelands raid and several Faction Reps to grind. Most of the Locations are included, but few I couldn't find at this point. Will update later when more is known.
- I haven't deleted any of the 4.0 or 4.1 epic gear from the list as of yet, but several of the lists are quite long and may do so before the next patch is released.
- I updated the stat weights to represent a higher level of gear. As a result the marginal value of Hit Rating/Spirit when up quite a bit as it tends to do when you increase the gear level. Other then that the stat equation didn't change much.
- The lists are still sorted by the reforged value in the list, but I was tempted to go with the none hit value since the increased value of hit is skewing some of the rankings.
The Usual Disclaimer Comments:
- This list is a tool, not a blueprint for how to gear. I’ve never intended my lists to be the definitive guide on how to gear a raiding moonkin. I don’t want to see any comments anywhere that say “item X is the best because it’s ranked number one on Graylo’s list.”
- The use of this list requires some thought. It is a general ranking intended to give you an idea on how items relate to each other. Please realize that these values are estimates based upon a fairly high gear level. Two items with a similar value, can be assumed to be relatively equal. Also, realize that your gear level may be different then the one I used. As a result you may value the stats differently. I highly suggest you look at this post to determine how you value stats. It's a little out of date, but the instructions at the bottem are mostly correct.
- It is up to you to manage your Hit cap. Do not take every number one item on the list.
- PvP gear is by definition not good PvE gear for moonkin. As a result I have excluded almost all items that are obviously PvP related from the list.
None of this is to say you can't or shouldn't use these items in your own set depending on your situation. I exclude them because I like to keep the lists short, and they generally fall at the bottom of the list when comparing gear of a similar ilevel. If you wold like to figure out where they fall please feel free to do the math yourself using the weights I've provided below. - Procs are particularly hard to quantify. Trinkets and other items that have procs or on use abilities are estimated in the list. However, it is likely that some of them are wrong given that we know very little about some of the procs. I will update them if I can, but I make no guarentees.
- Cloth: All cloth gear is excluded from this list. Equipping a single piece of cloth will cause you to lose 5% of your Int. In some very rare situations a cloth item might be better then the leather gear you currently have available to you. However, the gain would still be fairly small, and it's really not worth the effort.
- Resto Tier Gear: I have include the Resto Tier gear in the list since Spirit now converts to Spell Hit for Moonkin. However, it will not count towards you Set bonuses. Since Spell Hit is a highly valued stat many of the resto items are ranked higher then the Moonkin Tier. The other cause of this is that the set bonuses are not included in the valuation. Feel free to use a resto tier item, but realize you should use at most one.
Assumptions:
- To rank these items I used the following weights Intellect - 1.000 Spirit/Hit Rating - 0.4279, Spellpower - 0.7516, Haste Rating - 0.5505, Crit Rating - 0.3764, Mastery Rating - 0.4279. These are the weights that WrathCalcs spit out for a gear set I created using 378 ilevel gear.
- I assume that all socket bonus will be met using Superior quality gems. This is how I socket each gem: Meta = [Burning Shadowspirit Diamond], Red/Prismatic = [Brilliant Inferno Ruby], Yellow = [Reckless Ember Topaz], Blue = [Purified Dremonseye]. Yes, ignoring socket bonus will improve some of the items. This is particularly true if the socket bonus isa secondary stat like Crit or Mastery. However, the shifts in value should be small and it's easier manage this way.
Ranking Legend:
I've added two columns to the rankings. Here are the Explinations of all of the columns.
- Natural - Black - This is a simple volume times rate calculation and assumes you can use every stat.
- Reforge - Blue - This column adjusts the Natural ranking by reforging Crit or Mastery into Haste or Hit. This column assumes you need the hit, but Haste is given the priority of being reforged to since it can't be capped realistically.
- Natural No Hit - Red - Same as the Natural column but excludes any valuation from Hit Rating or Spirit.
- Reforge No Hit - Green - This column adjusts the Natural No Hit ranking by reforging Crit or Hit into Haste or Mastery.

Most people are suggesting that we go off set in the leg slot. At first glance this seems like the obvious choice because we are basically trading Crit for Hit. That said, it's not quite as good as it first appears. Moonkin tier item lookes slightly over itemized (or the Firecat Leggings are slightly under itemized) because they have a little more secondary stats then the Firecat Leggings do. Plus, the Firecat Leggings two blue gem sockets is less then desireable. I do think this is the best place to go off set but it's not the slam dunk it first appears to be.

The Moonkin tier helm is well itemized with Haste/Mastery. I don't see a good reason to go offset in this slot. The Cowl of the Clicking Menace is a solid piece with Spirit/Haste, but if you are looking to pick up extra hit the shoulder slot is a better place to go offset.
Shoulders:
If you're looking for additional hit, then the shoulder slot is a good place to go off set. The moonkin tier shoulders leave a little bit to be desired as a Crit/Mastery item and you could pick up Spirit/Haste by using the resto tier item.

This is a good place to stick with the tier set. The Obsidian Arborweave Gloves are better because they have more Haste, a better gem socket, and by the end of this tier we should be looking for ways to get rid of spirit/hit.

The Glowing Wing Bracers is clearly the better option since it is better itemized. I imagine most raiders won't touch the Smolderskull bindings because in the time it takes to farm the VP the Glowing Wing Bracers should have dropped. That said you get unlucky with drops or don't raid often the Smolderskull Bindings are solid.

It's kind of sad, but the Firescar Sash is the only option and it's a rep reward. I'm disappointed that there isn't a heroic version, but it's a good belt for it's ilevel, but I wish it had Mastery instead of Crit.

Every realistic boot option has spirit, so it's unavoidable to pick up some hit chance here. The heroic version of the Phoenix-Down Treads is by far the best option especially if you can covert some of that hit tho haste, but the Crafted Ethereal Footfalls are quite good as well and probably easier to get.

This is another no brainer for the most part. The top backs listed start out as rep rewards and should be easy to obtain. From a moonkin point of view the Rippling Flamewrath Drape is the better option in my opinion. If you're looking to avoid spirit and hit rating there is a third option in this tier. It is a Crit/Mastery item called the Wings of Flame. Unfortunately it's poorly itemized and the lower ilevel Sinestra Cloak is a better option if it's available.

The Flowform Choker is my first choice for this slot, but expect a lot of competetion for it. As the only neck with a gem slot, without spirit, and dropping off what should be a relatively hard boss this thing will be in high demand when it drops. The other options are hit necks without Haste and two of them are purchase able with Valor Points. I suspect a lot of us will have to tied ourselves over with these until we can get our hands on the Flowform Choker.

As usual, take these trinket valuations very lightly.
Darkmoon Card: Volcano is still very strong in tier 12. The Fiery Quintessence is a good option if you are looking for a big block of hit rating. Hamlet and some simulations from SimulationCraft are suggesting that Necromantic Focus will be one of the two BIS trinkets. In the end we will have to look at the logs and see how these perform in real life before we can get a solid understanding of their value.

One of your ring sockets will be fill with an Avenger's of Hyjal Rep reward. The question is which one. At this point I'm favoring the Infernal Signet over the Quicksilver Signet, because I haste is better then Mastery and I'm worred about having to much Hit. That said, if you play as resto frequently then the Quicksilver Signet is obviously the one.
For the second ring I'm leaning towards the Crystal Prison Band. I don't like that it is a Crit/Mastery ring, but the other options are pretty lackluster as well. Neither of the two Valor Point rings have Haste, plus all our VP should be focused on getting tier items at first.

The Goblet of Anger is clearly the better choice if you are going with a MH/OH combo. I would try and pick it up even if you are planning to use a staff, because it gives you more options down the road. That said obviously don't take it from someone who is planning to use it right way or as a part of thier BIS set.

Tier 11 was the tier of the main hand, and Tier 12 is the tier of the staff. That said, if you are planning to equip Hit Rating/Spirit in your weapon Sockets (and you don't have access to the legendary) your best option is Ko'gun: Hammer of the Firelord. It is perfectly itemized with Spirit Haste, but it drops off of final boss in the raid who is unlikely to be easy. If history is any indication it will probably be months before a many of players can kill Ragnaros on hard mode and get the heroic version of this weapon.
After Ko'gun, there is only one Main Hand option. Unfortunately, Chelley's Sterilized Scalpel doesn't have the best itemization for moonkin with Crit and Mastery Stats. I would suggest that most players focus on getting a well itemized Staff.

Obviously if you can get your hands on the Legendary Staff you should. My valuation above doesn't even include the proc and it's still by far the best weapon available. That said most you are like me and don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting it.
As I said in the Main Hand section, Tier 12 is the tier of the staff. In theory, MH/OH combos are still superior to Staves, but the MH options are very limited while the two handed options should be easier to obtain. If you can kill heroic Ragnaros and want to avoid getting Hit Rating from your weapons then Sho'ravon, Greatstaff of Annihilation is the best option. Otherwise you are pretty much guarenteed to pick up some hit in this slot.
